Many recovering alcoholics will tell you that this is the thought-provoking question that prompted them to seek out help with their alcohol addiction and get themselves into an alcohol rehab centre.

By definition, an alcoholic must consume more than 21 units of alcohol per week for males, and 14 units of alcohol per week for females to constitute having an alcohol problem according to the World Health Organisation. This is the “measure” of establishment by many western countries; however, it doesn’t have to be as rigid to think you are an alcoholic, or become an alcoholic. Just simply attending a pub or a bar every night after work every night for the entire evening can be a telltale sign you are an alcoholic – particularly if you don’t attend for the social element. Normally, the effects on relationships and friendships deteriorate through alcohol addiction so this removes all social aspects anyway

As a depressant, alcohol increases anxiety levels, depressive tendencies, paranoia attacks and confusion. If you drink to “null the pain” but only feel worse, then this is a common indicator that you could be suffering from alcohol addiction. But do not think you are the only alcoholic out there; you’re not! There are numerous avenues someone suffering from alcohol addiction can take; attend a local alcohol rehab centre, alcoholics anonymous meeting or even confide in a friend you can trust – it’s not something to be ashamed of
